The BBC radio 1 reaches the audience of 15 to mid twenties. They reach this audience with silly and funny games including celebrities aimed at younger people who knows this younger generation of music and entertainment.  The presenters are also young and lively so the listeners could relate to the presenters and his views on topics targeted and the younger generation.

BBC radio 2 has the target audience for 35+ as it has music that bring adults back to there teenage years with presenters talking about news and info.

BBC Radio 4 is targeted at the older generations with same-age presenters talking about serious topics, news going on using formal language.

The BBC demonstrates that a single broadcaster can have a range of brand identities that target different audiences.

Different types of music genres and categories with certain ones playing in different stations, the most popular one is pop and top of the charts, with that attracting younger generations and classical and reggae towards older generations that can also play classics from when they where young.

Music mixes including a bunch of hit songs played throughout stations. These also include relaxing sounds to but you i a calm mood thought these aren't played within radio stations. "Best new pop" this is an example of what could play in Radio 1 as the audience is for youngens.

There are loads of different presenters of different ages  for the audience and the appeal to the different types of music being used for the fonts of different stations goes to the audience like classic and boring would be for elders and fun would be for youngens.

Hmw for Monday 14th November
The target audience is seen in Radio one targeted towards older teens and young adults as they have presenters we can relate to with topics from society and politics to what’s happening around the world, we can relate as they have similar views as younger and older generations views differ. It also shows that it’s targeted towards young adults as the presenters aren’t formal all the time and swear not acting so formal and serious. The music is mostly pop that is trending on social media and the music industry. Like Sam Smith, Lizzo and artists (they don’t blurt swear words out of songs.) All of these specialties of Radio One make the station popular with a weekly broadcast number of 8.1 mill, making it a go to radio for teens and young adults.14th November 2022
BBC Radio and audiences
LO: to explore the BBC radio contextual issues and the audience behind the live lounge

The remit of radio 1 is to entertain the younger generation and teen listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. Its target audience is 15-29 year olds and it should also provide some programming for younger teenagers. It should offer a range of new music, support artists locally and in the country- and provide a platform for its listeners. News documentaries and advice campaigns should cover areas of relevance towards its young listeners.

These are appealing toards young generations as it has young artists that more people like who arent old and frail as they wouldnt know more of the artists. The special wakanda is tagtered towaeds teens ( i watched it last night and it was good) jThe content is for teens as it represents popular songs and trends.kids can relate to these podcasts and young artists who are inspiring to listeners with songs that are up to date and trend.

The typography is similar with appealing colours targeting its young audience, the artists and podcasts are similar. They also have Live Hacks with podcasts talking about the economyvg and environment and how our generation can help. With live lounge and radio 1 they have live performances and up-beat music.

Political music debaters reckon that mainstream pop and popular music isn't important and not informing even though its just music, making a debate wether radio 1 BBC should be covered by a funded license fee. Its not the same as being a commercial radio as the audience is towards younger audiences who aren't interested in commercials as much as older people. The BBC Live Lounge reflects diversity for young people as well as play music they enjoy which educate people arguing against PSB to show not only they play music but engage their audience and also inform them and educate them, showing PSB they need funding.

Media convergence is a term that can refer to the meaning of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitalisation and computer networking.

It advantages because the audience can access live lounge from multiple platforms which is beneficial as they have higher view rates. Public Service Radio has a wider target audience, and can have easy access and Vevo draws people in as its more popular.

Regulation: Via Of-com ( who regulates radio, looking at complaints e.c.t )

Pluraily- ensurong there is a diversity of viewpoints availabe and consumed across within media enterprises preventing someone having to much influence. The BBC also protect under 18's.

Live Lounge appeal and format
Lo: to explore the format of the show and it's appeal.

How does the BBC protect under 18's?
The BBC protects the younger audience (under eighteens) by putting warnings for triggering and sensitive topics of discussion, for the parents to turn off for their kids. There could be topics mentioning suicide and other disturbing topics for younger audiences. They also let people know when the presenters and people on tv might include swearing or rude language, to prevent kids from listening, hinting to the parents that the language and topics they indulge in isn't for children.

The Benefits of broadcasting on two channels means more views (more people listening to it) and also gives more publicity for bands being played, to gain more recognition.

Ricky, Charlie, Melvin are Radio 1 presenters, targeting towards teens and young adults.

Ricky's full name is Rickie Haywood Williams who hosts the live lounge along with Melvin Odoom and Charlie Hedges. In 2018 they moved to BBC Radio 1. In 2007, the Kiss 100 Breakfast signed up Ricky and Melvin, whilst Charlie played at festivals and sets as a DJ, in 2009 she joined as a co-host meeting Melvin and Ricky. The show then won an award at the Sony Radio Academy, resulting in the trio being on MTV digs and play at a live studio music show.  They can appeal to their target audience as they used to do DJ and teens would find this cool and because they are like semi-celebrities being popular in the music and radio industry. They have different backgrounds and ethnicities with different likeable personalities making teens appeal to presenters such as Ricky Melvin and Charlie along with the popular music amongst young adults.

The Live Lounge is also the name of a room in Radio 1 studio, where performances re broadcasted. Also from a larger BBC Madia Vale Studio in London. Artists are filmed in radio studios, acoustically with little rehearsal. They normal perform one or two songs and then a cover from an A  list Radio 1 artist who has had a release in the last six to nine months, to their genre they like or relate to.

What are the audience appeals of the Live Lounge? Why is it different to other radio shows?
Uses and Gratifications.

P ersonal Identity - Relating to the presenter shown through genre of music and personalitys/views,

I nfomation - The live lounge would give information and identification to who ever is performing.

E ntertainment - The audience can ingage in performance and would be filled with music lovers

S ocial Interaction - People can share with others verbally and digitally to others creating more recognition and popularity.

The Live Lounge appeals to the audience through engagement and personal identity socially as people could relate to the presenters making them like them and share the same views or even like the same genre of music. The Live lounge gives out information about new upcoming artists having live performances including semi-famous bands and singers that appeal to its target audience which could be a range of music from rap/pop to punk/rock. This entertains the audience as their listers are music fans who listen to music through out the day playing music and live performances keeping them entertained with a variety or singers and news within the music industry making them listen for more music of the preferred genres of young adults, as Live Lounge is digital it can be shared making it more and more popular amongst the younger generation and gaining more listeners, this can also make Live Lounge create more funding towards Live performances and making The Live Lounge a better experience.

Live Lounge appeal and format

The BBC Radio 1 Remit is targeted towards 15-29 year olds, entertain young listeners, gives information and topics relevant to younger people. They support upcoming, young artists in the Uk. You can access: news ( politics and other nationwide topics ), a mix of music and programming for the younger audience, they can also have talk about social media for the younger audience.

  • How is the audience appealed to-using language which young people understand, topics they like
  • What is the remit- to entertain a younger audience, interesting topics
  • How is the remit met What evidence from the show could you use to support your answer.- the slang they use, the music they play, the presenters age and views that the audience can relate to and important news, with how they use live music from Uk artists to give more recognition whilst also entertaining their audience.

1. ADDRESS THE QUESTION
2.AN EXAMPLE FROM THE CASE STUDY
3.EXPLAIN HOW THIS EXAMPLE TARGETS THE AUDIENCE
4.LINK BACK TO THE QUESTION

How does The Live Lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBC remit ?

The Live Lounge appeals to the audience through the use of language. This can be seen through the use of slang from the presenters. This is used this to feel more connected to the audience as they discuss topics such as social media and gossip preferably about artists. This ensures that TTL targets their audience (15-29) as it reflects this age groups views and has a broad network for the younger generation to relate to. It fits the remit as it focuses on topics a younger audience is more likely to enjoy.
TLL also attracts this younger generation as they include Artists from the Uk to talk on the show. The music they play are up-beat and more mainstream popular tunes which would either be trending or new music, this would attract a younger audience as it would play music they would've heard of and enjoy. TLL fits to the BBC remit through ensuring that the audience is targeted through music choice also including new, young Uk artists to create recognition whilst also entertaining the audience with its likeable and relatable presenters and music.

Question 1

Who regulates Radio in the Uk?  Ofcom

Who owns Radio 1? BBC

What is Public Service Broadcasting? Broadcasting intended for public benefit rather than pure commercial interests.

What is the term meaning the merging of previously separate media forms in one entity? Vertical Integration

Question 2

An advantage for the audience to listen to live radio is that it is new and is happening now, it is also easy access as you can stream it from at home to in the car.

An advantage of accessing radio content online is that you can share it to other people, listening to the same radio content, which the target audience of 15-29 year olds are more likely to do than older audiences.

Question 3

Explain how and why producers of radio programmes target different audiences. Refer to the Radio 1 Live Lounge to support your answer.

There are different methods for producers to target audiences as different age groups are attracted to different things, like genre of music, the way in which the presenters act and the topics of discussion. As we can see in the Radio 1 Live Lounge they target ages from 15 years to 29 years of age as this age group are young, meaning they enjoy listening to new music and talk about new topics and topics the other stations wouldn't speak about (as its not their option of targeted topics.) The presenters use slang words including, 'Sick' and 'Big up'. This is a difference as other stations wouldn't use this as it doesn't attracts other targeted age audiences. BBC stations fulfil the Public Service Broadcasting requirements without attracting advertisers. Instead they us a mix of Speaking and Music to keep the audience entertained, which targets a younger audience. Other radio stations could target different audiences with the presenters age, the music genre they play and the ads.

Exam

The music sections of paper 2 has 5 questions.
Questions 1,2 & 3 could be on Radio.

Question 1:
Media Conglomerate

Question 1:
Vertical Integration

Question 1:
A License Fee

Question 2:

1) Radio stations target their audience through music as different age groups like different music (most of the time) like how listening to pop or trap music is more common in teens and older music is more common in the older generation. The Radio 1 Live Lounge uses this so that their audience is broad but  still focuses on what young adults (15-29 years) like, which is popular and mainstream music.

2) Music radio stations can meet the requirements of the public service broadcasting by having presenters with a real and likeable personality as people would not like someone speaking who is boring and not interesting to listen to. The presenters hold the radio together as they draw the audience in either with the topic of their discussion or the fact they are interesting an entertaining to listen to. In Radio 1 the presenters draw their target audience with slang words and similar views to the people listening with the voice of others. They also don't have as much adverts as people like to listen to the presenters and the music. This also is what draws the people in with its reduce on adverts and more of talking and music which the audience enjoys.

3) Radio audiences are active by being on call with the presenters and engaging in conversations so people can share their views on the topics they discuss. There are also  phone-call quize's where someone can possibly win money just like how celebrities can win money to go to a charity. This makes the audience feel more into-it, being able to engage and enjoy listening to the radio and other people. They can be passive by listening to people and observing information and discussions to further knowledge on whats happening in the world. Radio 1 does this as they know some people like to engage and some people only like to listen.

Question 3:

BBC Radio has to provide a wider range of content than commercial radio because the audience could easily get bored and not listen to it anymore. We know this as Commercial radio has more adverts, as that is a source of how they get their money. BBC Radio knows that their audience prefers topics of discussion and music, which is why there are different BBC stations with a different range of music depending on its target audience. BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge is enjoyed by people as the adverts are limited from other stations and there are enjoyable things to listen to like for example: the artists they have on the show wether it be popular Uk artists or emerging new Uk artists, the friendly down- to -earth guests which is good as more people can relate to and also the less formal talking which makes people feel more comfortable. The Live Lounge targets people who likes to listen to music and feel comfort listening to a radio whilst still being fed information and news, making it important to provide a wider range of content instead of commercials.

Dirt
Lo: to reflect on our assessment.

Conglomerate: a large company which owns a set of smaller companies.

Diversification: adding other areas of business/ owns radio stations as well as magazines.

TV license: a funding source for a radio station.

Radio stations target audiences is the the way of getting guests on the shows, sometimes they can be famous people usually from the Uk. They attract the target audience with the use of music choice and the language on the station wether it be formal (targeting to older generations), or using slang like Radio 1 Live Lounge used to target their audience of 15-29 year olds, which works. Making the use of music and presenters language a successful way to target an audience.

Question 3

. BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several reasons

. Firstly Radio 1 provides a range of different music towards is targeted audience

.This example is due to the remit and in particular having to provide the target so more young adults listen to the station as even up to the language presenters use slang and topics relating to teens along with its music.

.We can identify this in the live lounge through topics of discussions that are relevant to teens and young adults, using life hacks. They use this to specifically target their audience as it would be irrelevant to the older generation and wouldn't enjoy the music as much as the younger generations.

Name- Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus

Genre- Pop/Rock

Uk release- June 20 2000

Its about: A loser guy in a high school who has a crush on this girl in a hallway who doesn't notice, until she asks him out.

What happens in the music video: A boy who has no friends or anyone to talk to likes a girl who has a popular boyfriend who is mean to him, she doesn't notice him until at prom she asks him out saying she is just like him, he then wakes up from a dream.

Lyrics:Her name is Noel I have a dream about her She rings my bell I got gym class in half an hour Oh how she rocks In Keds and tube socks But she doesn't know who I am And she doesn't give a damn about me 'Cause I'm just a teenage dirt bag, baby Yeah I'm just a teenage dirt bag, baby Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh Her boyfriend's a dick He brings a gun to school And he'd simply kick my ass if he knew the truth He lives on my block And he drives an I-Roc But he doesn't know who I am And he doesn't give a damn about me 'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh Oh yeah, dirt bag No she doesn't know what she's missin' Oh yeah, dirt bag No she doesn't know what she's missin' Man I feel like mold It's prom night and I am lonely, lo and behold She's walkin' over to me this must be fake My lip starts to shake How does she know who I am? And why does she give a damn about me? "I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby Come with me Friday, don't say maybe I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you ooh" Ooh yeah, dirt bag No she doesn't know what she's missin' Ooh yeah, dirt bag No she doesn't know what she's missin'

Record Labels:
  • To convey the meaning of the song
  • To promote the artist's image, identity, talent or status for an audience
  • To showcase or promote the artist's musical prowess for a specific audience.

For Teenage Dirtbag there is another purpose for a film that relates to the movie featuring the song, the film Loser has the same actor as in the mv and follows a similar storyline, of being a 'Teenage Dirtbag". It has the element of cross promotion where Teenage Dirtbag helps promote the film and the other way.

For Sk8er Boi Avril clearly has a fashion style, like a punky grunge style as you see in her music videos, she has the same clothing and story and scenery. It portrays the image of teenager aimed songs

Wheatus: Narrative and performance
Avril leg: Performance and some narrative

The Narrative element in teenage Dirtbag shows Live performance and focuses story and the performance focuses on the band. With Avril focuses on camera singing more than the story unlike Teenage Dirtbag.

Lo: To examine the use of media language in music videos

Mise En Scene covers: sets, hair and makeup, costume, props, setting, lighting, colour, performance (Positioning, Facial expressions, body language)

Beyonce: Beyonce is wearing this costume as the camo can represent that her breakup was war-like, winning a battle. Even though she looks strong, physically, she still looks feminine as her hair and makeup is done. The gold can represent divinity and power.

Bruno Mars: The MES suggest the video is in the early 2000's as the characters are wearing gold chains and caps, the men are dancing through what looks like a hotel that is rich suggesting he is dancing about wealth, we know who the mc is as he is in the middle (the singer Bruno Mars). The way they are moving and their facial expressions shows that the song is a up-beat pop song. The costume and the way he presents himself in the video can also suggest he's rich.

Taylor Swift:  There is wealth in the video from her taking a bath of jewellery and money which we can easily tell means mega-wealth. She also has a full face of makeup and styled hair, which considering she is a bath means she is not like an average person. There are fancy looking bath tiles, a gold tap and a odd see through bath. This can relate to her as an artist being really successful

Mise En Scene

Sk8r Boi By Avril Lavigne:

The costume was picked to be punk like and able to show her tattoos as thew genre of music is punk/pop, she also has a cap on (backwards) which signals this was in the early 2000's as its not as caps aren't as common as to this time where punks was more around. Her hair and makeup compliments her outfit as its grunge-like. In this mid shot the lighting is dim with a contrast of light and dark creating a grungy tone this part of her singing. She is in the centre of the video also claiming she's the mc.

This shot has different lighting, it has a green tone to it which is less girly and bright, like you would find in a girl pop group music vid. The colour green is also common in the punk community, we can also say this from her shirt being green and other shots having green and dark tones. She is in the centre of the screen again showing she is the mc. They are in a garage where is dark creating a dark yet confident tone with her stance making her look like she bout to do something illegal (which she is).
The background "characters" have the same style of clothing and attitude confirming this is a punk pop song.

In this scene she is again in the centre, but this time with people crowding around her, cheering and dancing. The clothes people are wearing are similar to Avril. She is on top of a car which is a stereotypical thing for punks to do but she's singing as well. The lighting us similar with a dark tone to it to make a grunge atmosphere. All of this connotes to the genre and the song.

MES in P!NK:
  • Set in a shop because the setting went from a boring shop to a disco/club which makes it more fun.
  • P!NK is wearing the colour pink which is ironic cause of
  • Makeup and outfit is bright to match the upbeat music
  • On roller skates in a shop
  • Lots of happy dancing
  • bright lighting.
To examine the use of media language in music videos

The green and toned down lighting reflects the genre of the song at what is happening. It fits it as its a grungy colour, the colour pink wouldn't go well because of its stereotypical girly nature. The outfits where the same colour. The dark toned outfits fits the genre and style she dresses as.

Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like a grungy skater pop star. This is achieved by using wrist bands with spikes on them and wearing a cap backwards which was trendy among alternative dressed people.
This could suggest that she is in the community of punks which is unlikely for celebrities as they are often seen as weirdos by people. It also suggests to the audience that she supports different groups of people from the way she includes everyone in her music video.
In Avril Lavignes music video it is set in public, with her surrounded by cars and a mini concert in a city which is illegal. We know this concert she is putting on is illegal because of the shots of police helicopter which is directed towards her. It was set in a city because it matches the punk/rock/pop genre and also to create more mayhem.

In this shot the girl is wearing the colour red which is known to be a colour that is attractive. Her dress looks well made and her hair and makeup are done to match the look, saying that she cares about her appearance. She is in the centre of the mid shot focusing on her face expression, suggesting she is an important role and is focused on the face area but still has the dress visible to prove she is there for the prom. Which we know from the background and context of the music video.

The Music videos for Avril Lavignes Sk8er Boi and Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag use setting and costume to achieve similar effects. For example in Sk8er Boi Avril wears punk clothes like wrist band with spikes giving a reckless look a cap on which was common within the skater look, this gives of punk and grunge vibes of the music video. The setting has dark lighting in scenes that match the mood of the style but the bright lighting fits the upbeat music, the setting is in a city to maybe gain attention towards this illegal concert to promote and show off her recklessness. The crowd around her, on cars, have the same style as her making it one big skating scenario.
In Teenage Dirtbag they wear baggy clothes and comfortable looking clothes for the loner. The clothes are very 90's with the recurring colour of orangey/red. The setting is in a highschool making it seem as thought they are telling a story as a regular day for a 90's student with its stereotypes. The lighting is bright and the tone matches he genre which is rocky.

LO: to explore how camera work is used to create meaning in music videos.

The setting connotes that the girl maybe alone or free, or both. We can tell this from the warm colours of the neatly set out ground. The warm colours suggests she is free as we can see her happy and re;axed expression even being alone. She looks calm, suggesting she is comfortable where she is. The camera shot is a long shot to show the space she is in without anyone possibly giving the meaning to the song, singing about being alone/free and comforted due to the use of the colour palette.

The camera movement in Teenage Dirtbag is cinematic and slow pan story-like. For example at one point in the music video the main character eating lunch alone tells a story in itself as we can see the long shot being used to exaggerate his loneliness and reality of people perceived as 'teenage dirtbags'. It fits the tone of the song as it tells the same story and is dull and cinematic.

Representation:
. Stereotypes
. Countertype
. Masculine/Feminine
. Powerful, Dominant etc
. Objectified
. Underrepresentation

Traditional stereotypes for men are straight, being strong and muscular and more aggressive (less emotional) whilst on the other hand females would be weak, seen as fragile, dependant, observant and obey males.

Objectification: The action of degrading someone to the status of a mere object

Sexual Objectification: When a male/female views another male/female primarily as an object of sexual desire, rather than a person.

Sk8er Boi
In Sk8er Boi Avril juxtaposes the female stereotypes of being very feminine and obedient and not the mc. The clothing fights women stereotypes on clothing with not wearing a dress but wearing what is seen as boy colours and wheres grungy clothing with a loose tie which can connote to being a rule breaker and being rebellious. The setting can be seen as grotty and dark which signals all about Avril being punk with her own style. She uses hang signals and has almost aggressive expression showing dominance until the police came and then her expression changes and goes back to the stereotypes of females being worried despite the light halo making her seem angelic but also rebellious.

The setting has a mostly white cast even though being in a urban city so that lacks representation in ethnicity.

Teenagers that dress and act alternatively which is outside gender norm can make them feel seen and represented. This style that Avril wears can boost recognition of different styles and make teens come out of their shells and feel safe within this community Avril dominates.

Even though Avril shows this alternative community this video is very heterosexual which is unusual because there where quite a lot of homosexual people in this alternative community.

Teenage Dirtbag
In Teenage Dirtbag Wheatus is displayed a rock hybrid genre. We can see this through the lyrical choice which tells as narrative about a loser in high school which ties in with a film that is just like the video (with the same actor). The cross cutting between the band and narrative helps the audience understanding and actually seeing the band playing the song which boosts their own recognition. Low angle shots shows dominance and popularity added with the slow motion, whilst long wide shots shows loneliness and a sense of emptiness comparing the mc to the jock. This sums up what teenagers go through in high school no matter what role the audience feels like, they all know this is a realistic impression of a school.

The representation is like Sk8er Boi with excluding other races and ethnicity along with sexuality representation.

The band are adults playing in a school which can interpretate that this song/band is targeted towards all age audiences but mostly teenagers/adults with the feeling of its realism.
